Celebrities tell 'Christmas Stories' to Benefit Needy Children
HOLLYWOOD – Those stopping in at the Chuch of Scientology Celebrity Centre International the other night might easily have thought they were at the Emmys, what with Kirstie Alley sharing the stage with the likes of Kelly Preston, Jason Lee, Giovanni Ribisi, Danny Masterson, Erika Christensen, Christopher Masterson, Marisol Nichols, Catherine Bell and Jennifer Aspen. But what was really going on was the 14th Annual "Christmas Stories" fund-raiser for the Hollywood Policy Activities League (PAL).
They were joined by special guest performers from Fox's "24" — Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carlo Rota and Eric Balfour; and the CW's "Veronica Mars" — Ryan Hansen and Chris Lowell. It all took place in a 1930s-style radio show setting and included skits and traditional and original stories and songs. This annual event has raised over $190,000 for community programs since it began in 1993. The Police Activities League (PAL) is a nationwide development program operated by police officers who take pride in setting a good example for young people and giving them hands-on help. The program includes educational and recreational activities for at-risk youth who might otherwise fall prey to gang violence, drug use and criminal activities. Over 1,000 Hollywood youth participate in the swimming, street hockey, basketball, martial arts, soccer, computer activities, arts, crafts and educational tutoring they provide. Hollywood PAL and the Hollywood Division of the L.A.P.D. hold an annual Christmas party in cooperation with the principals of public elementary schools in and around Hollywood. Many of the children who are invited would otherwise have no Christmas celebration at all. PAL provides meals, games and toys (delivered by Santa Claus, of course).
"We present 'Christmas Stories' each year to support our police in their effort to create a safe environment for children in Hollywood," said Maria Ferrara, President of the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre International. "Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard once said, 'When children become unimportant to a society, that society has forfeited its future.' The Police Athletic League is helping to make the future a bright one for these children, and we wholeheartedly support their work."

Kate Ceberano is one of my favorite entertainers. So it's great to see she has a new album. I think she took some time off after her baby was born. Glad to see she's back in action!
Anne Archer is a member of the Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, CA. She has recently formed a human rights group. Here's what it says on her web site -- Artists for Human Rights.
The Church of Scientology International is very active in the field of human rights and Ms. Archer has worked in these campaigns and was even awarded a Freedom Medal by the International Association of Scientologists for her work in this area.
"Founded by the celebrated Academy Award nominated film actress and human rights advocate, Anne Archer, Artists for Human Rights invites artists from all disciplines to contribute. Participation is broad-based, embracive of all races, creeds and nationalities with its only prerequisite - support and affirmation of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Working board members are exactly that - working board members. Not in name only, working board members attend meetings, take on projects, bring their own creative genius to the cause for human rights.
"Maintaining its goals and mission statement, Artists for Human Rights works inclusively with allied organizations to bring artistic expression to bear in the human rights arena. What many do not know about AFHR founder Anne Archer is that she has tirelessly fought for human rights across the globe for nearly two decades. She has led religious tolerance movements in Germany, France, the United States, Spain and Africa. She has, with other artists, led protest marches, testified to Congress, met quietly and openly with State Department officials around the world - always bringing her creativity and passion to the fight.
"More recently, Anne has been an instrumental force for Youth for Human Rights International which has over 25 chapters around the world promoting human rights in schools, orphanages and colleges, as well as holding Youth Summits and film festivals in concert with UNICEF and the United Nations.

John Travolta has been strutting his stuff and proving he still has all the right moves. Last weekend saw the 37th Anniversary Gala Saturday, an event for the highest-profiled followers of Scientology - and John was making the most of the proceedings. The former Grease star attended the event in Hollywood with wife Kelly Preston, although fellow Scientology followers Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were nowhere to be seen.
Soul diva Chaka Khan was providing the entertainment and belted out numerous classic tunes for the 1,100 invitees to boogie away the night. John explained his attendance: "When I found Celebrity-Centre I found my life again. "That's when I found Scientology and I found the truth and I found what works and so for me it is very important yearly to mark that celebration almost like an anniversary. "There are a lot of people doing the same things I am but each year it gets even more impressive I think." John's wife Kelly added: "I think artists have a special need, they are always out there, they are giving themselves. "They are trying to create and trying to create freely and there are a lot of things that weigh you down or eat at you, whether it is drugs, alcohol, different people." She continued: "Scientology can really give you tools to work in the workplace, to create freely and just be happier."
Right.
As I see it, celebrities in any industry, whether the arts and entertainment, business, politics, the humanities -- these people are under that kind of pressure and scrutiny where any weakness magnifies and the most important ones tend to blow up.
Unfortunately, all too often psychs jump in and then they really hit the skids.
Two years ago David Miscavige, in his speech This is Scientology made a very interesting point. He was addressing the question "Why a Celebrity Centre." He referred to something L. Ron Hubbard once said: "The world is carried on the backs of a desperate few" and Mr. Miscavige pointed out that those few are the very people Celebrity Centre was established to help.
The Scientology Celebrity Centre web site goes on to say: "Unfortunately, it is these desperate few who are often the most neglected. Unfortunately, it is these desperate few who are often the most neglected.
"It is for this reason that L. Ron Hubbard saw to the formation of a special Church of Scientology which would cater to these individuals — the artists, politicians, leaders of industry, sports figures and anyone with the power and vision to create a better world. That Church is Celebrity Centre International.
"Now one might argue that these individuals already have benefits that many will never have. But, ask any one of them — ask yourself — it can become a lonely world. Subject to the unusual pressures that come with prominence and responsibility, being looked upon under a microscope for good or bad — these are burdens others can’t imagine. Not to mention the counter-attack such individuals are subjected to by those less-ambitious who would rather fight to maintain a 'status quo' than allow another to attempt a change or improvement.
"You see, there’s no shame in helping the artist. In fact, in the larger scope of societal help, we had better help the artist if we wish to advance the society at all."
The staff are doing their usual magic, transforming the (already beautiful) premises into a place of magic.
Can't wait to see it.
I also look forward to everything about the evening -- the atmosphere, spending the night with friends (old ones and those you make right on the spot) the wonderful food, the primo entertainment, and the speeches. Two years ago David Miscavige gave the most incredible speech. (I know I've mentioned it before but it really was an experience to be there when it was given).
